My friend and cousin Derry sent this to me this morning commenting on my recent blog on GenealogyWise.com (Professor Gates, Michelle's Great-Great-Great-Granddaddy and Mine) and it echoes what I have been thinking. This is what she wrote:

Hi Sally,
Glad to hear the article led you to create a blog. What a good idea.
We lived in Germany for several years during the 1960s. I was very interested in the way the Germans went about educating their people about the horrible events of WWII. Their newsreels and documentaries spared no one's sensibilities. Not much room for denial. It seems to me that admitting what the consequences of legalized slavery might be to later generations is difficult but necessary if we are ever to get our heads straight about what it is to be American. It is really hard for me to admit that slavery is part of our heritage. And the too common attitude that Aw, shucks it wasn't so bad, is really shabby. So, good for you girl. You are facing it with facts. And most important they are facts that will be valuable to other people.Love, Derry
The reference to Germany is relevant and we Americans are in need of a national conversation about our greatest shame. The Gates article is a good start. But after the summer of screaming, gun-toting, Obama hating protesters, and a "You lie" yelling Congressman, in a climate like this who could possibly imagine a group of people who could go about gently, kindly, compassionately, peacefully doing something positive and useful toward healing our wounds? We can. Genealogists: amateurs, professionals, corporate, religious, academic, local, international, etc.
As you all probably know,
Barack Obama and family have recently joined the competition to host the 2016 summer Olympics. Sadly we are disappointed that we have been eliminated from the competition. The presidential family was planning on hosting this big event in Chicago, Illinois. Michelle Obama says "Chicago is such a great place with wonderful people". Now we will watch the Olympics of 2016 take place in either Madrid, or Rio DeGinario!
Your Friend,
Erin
WE came to Washington DC for http://chalkthewhitehouse.com, to celebrate the Presidents Birthday and to express our individual unique miraculous creative genius with the President in forming a more perfect union. The participants in this years events are planning on amazing things for celebrating 2010. We learned so much this trip. Thank YOU ALL for participating.
Makiah was hoping to realize his "Dream BIG Dreams" of playing some basketball hoops on the White House Basketball Court but was threatened by the secret service to have him talken away by child custody and have his father experience some very very unpleasant times. Still totally puzzeled how a ten year old special needs boy who adores the secret service can be a threat to them or anyone.... or me, who claims to be one of the most peaceful experts on peace on the planet...interesting learning experiences.
I am currnetly working on the book "dream big dreams" the summation of our celebrational journey to DC and the first annual ChalkTheWhiteHouse event. WE learned alot about national archetypes concerning the male and female counterparts ..thank you Mary Mother of God and all things Michelle Obama. We are looking forward to being SIM orchestrators with the Institue of Peace. Balancing all aspects of forming a more perfect union with "happy hands, happy feet, happy heart...happyplanetindex.org" ....WE feel that the simple easy educational and health shifts of experiencing the ultimate health of oneself is here and now...an integral part of our history and future coming together to cross paths on that most rewarding road of being oneself.
Hoping to share more with everyone when the book "Dream Big Dreams" is completed. Until then giving all your focus and support to Michelle Obama in all she does for the ultimate goal of THE CHILDREN is absolutely appreciated by ALL of us who are "Dreaming Big Dreams" .....
Regarding the friendly disagreement between the Bard and myself, Bush and Cheney already enjoy undeserved folk hero status, and within the far right realms, they will always enjoy such status regardless of outcome.
I appreciate the debate.
For me it's coming down to what we are preserving- or attempting to preserve- I think the bad far outweighs the good here- and I believe that if Obama sidesteps this it will be his downfall.
President Obama will forever be linked to the Bush Torture Coverup and our great victory over the establishment will be torn down.

I understand the arguments and how our troops in additional harm's way and additional stain to our national image at a time when we are just starting to recover face in the world's eyes does us no justice.
At the same time, this has to be addressed-
The American taxpayer paid for and is still paying for Iraq...

Ain't she SWEET? We all know the tune...sing along! (see her walkin' down the (now heavily guarded) street/ the kind of girl I'd like to meet/ Ain't she sweet!)
I never before really cared about "First Laidies" until Michelle burst upon the scene. All of the recent ones, with the exception of Hillary, seemed to be either NUTS (witness Barbara!) or hoplessly shallow (you'd have to be to put up with "43"...a number to which he couldn't count; which has been scientifically proven; and we ALL know how much they held science close to their hearts!)
I, of course, cannot bring any of the First Ladies from Jackie-O back into the fray, as THEY all had class and even inluence!
Stephen Views the News April 9, 2009
http://stephenviewsthenews.blogspot.com/
* Fashion News ~ enough of politics, economics, war and unemployment – The more important question is, “How was Michelle Obama’s couture received in Europe?” At least three times the FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) wore the designs of lesser known designer Jason Wu. Can you imagine? Women’s Wear Daily asks where the love has gone for big name designers like Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren.
Iconic fashion designer Oscar de la Renta took off the Gucci kidskin gloves to assess Michele’s choice of wardrobe. "American fashion right now is struggling." Concerning the outfit worn to meet Queen Elizabeth he said, “You don't...go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater.”
Well-known designer Vera Wang offered less edginess in her observations and more pleading: "I love seeing young designers and their vision and how they grow and all of that," she says. "On the other hand, of course, I wish she would consider some of us, because I think we also have contributions to make."
Liberal blogger and author Arianna Huffington, appearing on CBS, offered this observation: "Even if you don't terribly like that particular outfit," she said of Mrs. Obama's fashion sense, "you know it is what she loves and what she looks good in."
Progressive blogger Stephen Weinstein noted, in an interview with himself, that he was not crazy about the black coat Mrs. Obama wore with the purple stuff all over it.
* Hot Toddy replaces Scotch on the Rocks - “Arctic sea ice is melting so fast most of it could be gone in 30 years. A change in the amount of ice is important because the white surface reflects sunlight back into space… When ice is replaced by dark ocean water, that sunlight can be absorbed, warming the water and increasing the warming of the planet.” Also disappearing is the common sense of global warming deniers. Just because Fargo got two feet of snow does not mean the planet is not warming. The dynamics are apparently too complicated for the agenda-driven and scientifically challenged. The next thing they will be telling us is that evolution is a sham.
* Keeping abreast of trends – The swelling numbers of enhanced breasts that dominate television, cinema, magazines, fashion and pop culture is perhaps a metaphor for the U.S. in the early years of the 21st Century. Victoria’s Secret is no longer a secret. Phoniness has become de rigueur both in leadership and feminine allure. The inflexibility and grandiosity of the manufactured female breast is representational of much of our society – more pump than circumstance.
* Speaking of breasts – National Cleavage Day was celebrated on April 3rd, thanks to the initiative of the makers of Wonderbra. I look forward to the day when Jockey will produce miracle under ware for men, such as a MrWonderThong. In any case, Wonderbra brand manager Samantha Paterson said, "It gives women a chance to be beautiful and glow in the furtive, yet appreciative, glances their cleavage evokes from men." The last time I looked my furtive glances were not especially appreciated but, in support of this national day of pride, I remained furtive, committed and focused.
* A fading American trait ~ Integrity – This is a societal issue that runs broad and deep. We are experiencing a period where money and power have trumped and overwhelmed the common good and a sense of community. At every level of government investigations and corruption convictions dominate the news. Police corruption and abuse stain the landscape with regularity. In Pennsylvania two judges of Juvenile Court accepted bribes from the operators of juvenile detention centers. The judges encouraged accused youths to forgo legal representation and then found the youths guilty, resulting in incarceration. The FBI is so burdened by a broad range of investigations that they are overwhelmed. We look down upon Mexico and many other countries for the corruption that has rotted their political and legal systems but shrug at what is taking place in our own country. Oh well.
* Equality – The word has always been synonymous with America but for many it has also been an antonym. African Americans and Gays can attest to this reality. The good news is that gains have been made and these gains are marshalling momentum. The election of Barack Obama did not obliterate racial prejudice but certainly can be seen as a milestone. Three very recent events will be of import for gay rights. The Supreme Court of Iowa validated legal rights for gay relationships as did the legislature of Vermont which overrode their Governor’s veto of legislation recognizing gay marriage. The D.C. Council voted to recognize other states’ gay marriages. The religious right has every right to advise its members on sexuality. It has no right to infringe on the rights of citizens who choose a different course. That is the heart of freedom and one of the many reasons why we have separation of church and state. As former Prime Minister of Great Britain Tony Blair said in a recent interview about gay rights, “Equality isn't political correctness, it's just justice.”
* Not a good week for the religious right ~ and that is good news – First their eyeballs were spinning with the news from Iowa and Vermont concerning gay marriage. This was capped by the President of the United States having the “audacity” to say in a speech in Turkey that America is a secular nation. Unlike his predecessor, President Obama must have read the U.S. Constitution.
Today the Obamas are hosting the first Seder ever held at the White House. The Passover holiday dinner remembers the Jewish exodus from slavery under Pharaoh over 3000 years ago. Yes we can in this country recognize each others religious beliefs while not imposing one group’s beliefs upon another. “Diversity” is not a four-letter word, nor is “respect.”
A reader forwarded a YouTube Video “20 Things To Do With Matzah” for those challenged with leftovers.
* Self-Euthanasia – May I take your order please? – MSNBC listed “The 19 worst drive-thru foods in America.” I was especially impressed with Hardee's Monster Thickburger. The sandwich contains 1420 calories, 108 grams of fat of which 43 grams are saturated fat, 2770 mg of salt and 230 mg of cholesterol. Put in perspective it is the caloric equivalent of 6 McDonalds hamburgers, the saturated fat of 43 strips of Oscar Mayer bacon, and the sodium equivalent of 84 saltine crackers. As we say in the fast food business, “Have It Your Way.”
* Warts that won’t go away – Former VP Dick Cheney recently made the media rounds where he had the opportunity to again preach about the justification of torture. He continued to emphasize its value in protecting Americans. We have heard this theme from other former Bush administration players as well as some Republican congressmen and right-wing media miscreants. Having closely followed this circus of situational ethics I have yet to hear of one instance where the use of torture saved one American life. You can bet your ass that if weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq we would know about it. You can make a similar bet that if a terrorist plot against America was thwarted because of information garnered from the use of torture it would have made headlines for days. It may be human nature to believe your own lies but it is neither good foreign policy nor moral.
* Call me proud, Mr. President – It has been quite a while since the leader of our country was welcomed with open arms, applauded and respected in a foreign venue. On his just-ended visit to Europe President Obama, our representative to the world, spoke in complete sentences. He answered unplanted questions openly. He renewed the concept of diplomacy and international cooperation. The last U.S. President’s foreign policy was predicated on megalomania, nation building and myopic militarism. The current challenges are more daunting because of previous policy but the possibility of resolution has substantially increased. The Progress Report reviews the substantive accomplishments of Obama’s European trip. Call me proud and hopeful.
* “You don't...go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater.” Oscar de la Renta
President Obama isn’t the only member of the Obama Family with a comic book. In January, Marvel Comics came out with a limited edition comic book showing Spider-Man teaming up with President Obama at the inauguration. Now, it's First Lady Michelle Obama's turn to be a superhero. Her biographical comic book hits the stands next month It will be will be officially released on April 25 and will sell for $3.99.The 22 page comic traces her roots from the South Side of Chicago, to the Ivy League Greens of both Princeton and Harvard Universities, to the historic corridors of The White House. The book's publisher, Washington State-based Bluewater Productions, predicts this will be a big seller. You can pre-order it right here. This comic book will be the third installment of the "Female Force" series profiling female leaders. Issues featuring Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sold out immediately upon their release.Michelle Obama is educated, visionary, assertive, enterprising, and a serious intellectual. But, she is also a superhero! Wow. Actually, I call her a cultural hero because of the earth-shattering impact she is already having on this country, and, the world at large. Michelle Obama is likely to be just as transformational as her husband, if not more so. Chicago Magazine’s 2009 February cover story on Michelle Obama was like none other that I’ve read on her. It was a great, refreshing, engaging article that revealed her to be the fiercely determined, family- and community-oriented person we already know her to be. This is why I know the comic book will be a huge seller!

The First Lady at Miriam’s Kitchen
Yesterday Mrs. Obama served food at Miriam’s Kitchen, a local non-profit organization that provides healthy, nutritious meals to the homeless in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Obama discussed the need to support food banks and soup kitchens around the country given that things will get worse before they get better. (View full size) She said Miriam’s Kitchen "is an example of what we can do, as a country and as a community, to help folks when they’re down. We’re all going to need one another in these times. We’re going to need to keep lifting each other up, in prayer and in hope."

How the media can help to defend democracy
New York / London. Since 1984 I am working as a journalist, broadcast journalist and author. Already in the early age of 16 years of age in 1984 I have noticed writing for the paper Daily Mail (Tagespost, Speyer am Rhein, Germany) that the media national and international has a very important role in concern to defend democracy.
Some people in the United States of America know what happened in Germany. In the years 1933 to 1945 people in Germany have suffered a lot because of the tyranny of the Nazi regime and the aftermath of World War II. The time of sorrow was not over in Germany in 1945. From 1945 to 1990 many people in Eastern Germany have suffered until 1989 / 1990 because in Eastern Germany has come to power another dictatorship regime.
Since about 20 years people in Germany and Eastern Germany have a real change to learn what a good democracy could stand for. However as we are all effected by the global financial crisis, global food crisis and many other serious threats we should be aware of the situation not to loose the freedoms and liberties such as granted by the Bill of Rights, the Constitution of the United States of America or as provided in the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights proclaimed three years after World War II in New York City by the United Nations (UN, www.un.org ) .
Because of the very special situation that my grandfather, a former FRENCH ARMY OFFICER Haedi Sabaot a FRENCH citizen is missing since 1945 after World War II I have been forced to think different. Already as a teenager I have been concernd about the threat, that France and Germany may could be at war each other again, as it has taken place in World War I and World War II.
For which country should I fight? Against the country where my grandmother Mrs. Martha Kolcaz was born - against Germany? or against the my grandfathers country which is France.
Already in early age I am came to the conclusion that best we can do is to avoid a new war between France and Germany because I could not make a serious decision on which side or which country I should fight for. So I became after serving for 15 months for the "enemy forces" the German airforce a pacifist. Therefore I got in trouble with the German Military Court.
Because the German Military Officers have been not willing to understand, that I am by no means willing to fight against my grandfather, the former FRENCH ARMY OFFICER and French citizen, Mr. Haedi Sabaot or his friends.
Working for democracy, peace and liberty is not always this is and it required that we are willing to work and labor hard to defend democracy, peacce and liberty.
The United States of America (U.S.A.) is known in all the world as the defender of democracy and therefore I do believe that it is important to support "our" U.S. President Barack H. Obama and his wife and even other people such as the journalist, broadcast journalist and author Amy Goodman which can be called a "true voice for peace."
There is no doubt, when the first Afro-American U.S. President of the United States of America got elected in 2008 Barack H. Obama became since he is in office also the most powerful man on this earth. Imagine if only our U.S. President Barack H. Obama would work for democracy, peace, joy, liberty, social welfare and other elementary and important issue. Certainly he would be able to move something but not enough.
Therefore I do believe it is very important that many other people, precious women and men will get involved in the American and international mission to work for democracy, liberty, peace, health care, social welfare and other important issues and will work together for something good.
Amy Goodman a relative of Holocaust victims and a precious journalist and author is one these precious American woman working hard for the freedom of the press, democracy, liberty and peace.
Amy Goodman has received recently in December 2008 the Right Livelihood Award, which is also known as Alternative Nobel Prize.
Producing media or even an independent radio and television news hour is hard labor. However Amy Goodman has seen as some other journalists, broadcast journalists and authors including me, that there must be another answer then war.
Because I have been looking for a way how to avoid war between two or more nations already in 1986 I came to the conclusion that by supporting international understanding we could perhaps contribute a very important work for peace, liberty and democracy.
To work together for something good, for peace, liberty and democracy is a duty to all people even in their own interest.
In these serious and some times in very difficult times there is a job to do for everyone. Every one not only U.S. citizen can get involved in working for democracy, liberty, peace and the recovery of the United States of American and its people and many other people in many different places in this world.
In 1986 I have founded in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom and in the German city of Speyer am Rhein, the international media network IBS Independent Broadcasting Service Liberty, Radio IBS Liberty and IBS Television Liberty.
Radio IBS LibertyIBS Independent Broadcasting Serivce LibertyRadio IBS Liberty is an alternative public radio network which has been founded in 1986 in the English city of Leeds in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom and in the German City of Speyer am Rhein, Germany, as as part of IBS Independent Broadcasting Service Liberty. It is an international and inter-cultural media network with about 12 affiliated other television and radio programs and other journalists, broadcast journalists and authors.Radio IBS Liberty and IBS Independent Broadcasting Service Liberty are independently operated, non-commercial, listener-supported radio stations in the United Kingdom and in Germany that is known for its liberal political orientation. The public radio network in the United Kingdom, Germany and even other countries; it is operated by the IBS Independent Broadcasting Service media network with support from a small company based in London, Grace MedCare Ltd., United Kingdom and others.Radio IBS Liberty has its own radio archives, housed in France, United Kingdom, Germany and other countries.HistoryEarly historyRadio IBS Liberty and IBS Independent Broadcasting Service Liberty which is also known as Radio IBS Leeds, IBS Television Leeds (because of the place of its foundation) was founded in 1986 by the journalist and author of five books Andreas Klamm. He is also known as a pacifist. After the completion of his entire military service with the German Air Force in 1988-1989 for 15 months he filed for conscientious objector status, which was denied by German Military authories. The grandfather of Andreas Klamm is the former FRENCH ARMY OFFICER Haedi Sabaot and a French citizen, which brought the journalist, broadcast journalist and author in a serious conflict and caused him to start to think about the situation what could happen if there would be another war between France and Germany. The French Army Officer Haedi Sabaot is missing since 1945 after World War II. The founder of IBS Independent Broadcasting Service Liberty has joined other conscientious-objectors. Andreas Klamm is working since 1984 as a journalist, broadcast journalist, radio and television producer and author. His grandmother has left in 1950 Germany for ever and became a citizen of AUSTRALIA in the city of Melbourne, State of Victoria. He believes that international understanding could help to avoid wars and other conflicts.Recent history, 2000sRadio IBS Liberty has aired its own television productions from New York City in 2001 / 2002 related to the attacks on the World Trade Center during a special coverage.Director of IBS Independent Broadcasting Service Liberty and Radio IBS Liberty is since 1986 Andreas Klamm. In 2000 new radio and television productions called "XXL-info.Compact", "XXL-info. Gesundheit", "XXL-info.Culture" and other programs have been launched and got international attention even in countries such as Japan.Radio IBS Liberty is also producing educational radio and television programs for an inter-religious understanding such as faith programs about the Jewish, Muslim, Christian faith and religion and others. The idea to produce such programs in the German language and in the English language came through an inspiration through another radio program produced by BBC London (Britsh Broadcasting Cooperation)In 2006 the co-operation with the international independent media project Libery and Peace NOW! Human Rights Reporters has been launched and Radio IBS Liberty providing news stories and radio programs in association with Liberty and Peace NOW! Human Rights Reporters. As in the year of the foundation Radio IBS Liberty is still operating under NO- and even LOW-Budget conditions. * Radio IBS Liberty, (http://www.radioibsliberty.blogspot.com ) * Liberty and Peace NOW! Human Rights Reporters (www.humanrightsreporters.wordpress.com )The radio programs have been heard by listeners from about 40 different countries.Although the situation is quite difficult for the independent radio network during times of a global financial crisis Radio IBS Liberty and IBS Independent Broadcasting Service Liberty are continuing to expand its international services in the English, French and German language.ProgramsSince 1986 Radio IBS Liberty is producing news and information programs which do support international understanding. In 2000 several new radio and television programs have been launced such as "XXL-info. Compact", "XXL-info. Culture", "XXL-info. Pflege und Soziales", "XXL-info. News", "XXL-info. Special" and othersSince 2006 the radio and television program "Libery and Peace Now!" Two journalists laboring hard for democracy: The award winning, journalist brodcast journalist and author Amy Goodman from Democracy NOW! on www.democracynow.org (right) which has received in December 2008 in the city of Stockholm in Sweden the Right Livelihood Award as known as the alternative Nobel Prize and the journalist, broadcast journalist and author Andreas Klamm (left) from Liberty and Peace NOW! Human Rights Reporters on www.humanrightsreporters.wordpress.com.
Amy Goodman is the first journalist which has received the alternative Nobel Prize, the Right Livelihood Award which is given by the Right Livelihood Foundation and Mr. Jakob von Uxekuell which used to be member of the European parliament.
I do believe that Amy Goodman is one of the world best journalists, broadcast journalist and authors and a good American citizen which is laboring hard for a good democracy. The television and radio program Democracy NOW! which Amy Goodman presents with Juan Gonzalez is excellent. In December 2008 we had a chance to meet in Stockholm in Sweden. It is a great honor to meet a precious woman and journalist like Amy Goodman is one.

Michelle Obama speaking Wednesday to employees of the Housing and Urban Affairs Department, part of her tour to get to know Washington.
WASHINGTON — The government workers greeted Michelle Obama like a Hollywood celebrity, whooping and cheering and oohing and aahing over her slate gray power suit. But when she took to the podium, the nation’s self-described mom in chief quickly turned policy wonk.
The latest on President Obama, the new administration and other news from Washington and around the nation. Join the discussion.
Mrs. Obama met well-wishers last month after having lunch with Adrian M. Fenty, the mayor of Washington, and his wife.
The first lady pitched her husband’s economic stimulus package, including plans to create 15,000 affordable housing units, weatherize 2 million low-income homes and repair military housing. Such investments, Mrs. Obama told employees at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, would prevent “an increase in homelessness during these tough economic times.”
In her first weeks in the White House, Mrs. Obama has been the gracious hostess and loyal spouse, welcoming visitors to the Executive Mansion and accompanying President Obama to a prayer breakfast and to a charter school to read to second graders. But in a departure from her predecessor, Mrs. Obama has also begun promoting bills that support her husband’s policy priorities.
Last month, Mrs. Obama celebrated the enacting of a pay-equity law with a reception for women’s advocates at the White House. Last week, she supported the economic stimulus bill on her visit to the housing agency and another to the Department of Education.
Mrs. Obama plans to visit all the cabinet-level agencies on her tour to listen to and get to know Washington in the coming weeks, her aides say. They said she relished the chance to serve as one of the president’s chief surrogates on critical policy matters.
“One of the things she does really well is to highlight the benefits of pieces of legislation,” said Jackie Norris, Mrs. Obama’s chief of staff. “She’s really kind of laying out things that are important to the administration. I think she’ll play an active role in supporting the president’s agenda.”
It is a notably different approach than the one embraced by the former first lady, Laura Bush, who like most others steered clear of discussing legislation. Some observers praised Mrs. Obama’s foray into the legislative debate, saying the new first lady, who is a Harvard-educated lawyer and a former hospital executive, was eminently qualified to promote the president’s policies.
Others expressed surprise, saying they had expected Mrs. Obama to focus on her daughters and on the traditional issues she had emphasized in the presidential campaign, like supporting military families and working parents. Her remarks, they said, carried echoes of former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, though Mrs. Obama has said she will not become involved in policymaking as Mrs. Clinton did.
“She went to some lengths to say she was going to be first mom in chief,” Myra Gutin, a scholar of first ladies at Rider University in New Jersey, said of Mrs. Obama. “I don’t think we ever really imagined her edging toward public policy like this. It’s not like she’s making public policy. But it’s a little less neutral than some of the other things she’s talked about focusing on.”
Marcia D. Greenberger, co-president of the National Women’s Law Center here, countered that Mrs. Obama was successfully balancing her ceremonial role as first lady, her role as a mother and her keen interest in public policy.
“It seems like a combination of responsibilities that fit very naturally with who she is,” said Ms. Greenberger, who attended the signing of the pay-equity law at the White House. “You don’t have a sense that being a mom and being human and being able to understand everybody’s daily struggles has to come at the expense of her intelligence, her expertise and her understanding of the issues.”
Mrs. Obama’s aides say she is still feeling her way as first lady. She is meeting regularly with her staff to plan events and hammer out her policy agenda even as she juggles play dates and goes over homework with her daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. (And yes, Mrs. Obama, like her husband, is keeping her BlackBerry.)
When Mr. Obama stood alongside members of Congress in a White House ceremony to celebrate the signing of the pay-equity legislation, Mrs. Obama found a seat in the audience with the women’s advocates, not on stage with the lawmakers.
And in her speech at the Education Department last week, Mrs. Obama quickly corrected herself when she used the word “we” to describe the educational investments the president hoped to make. “I shouldn’t say ‘we,’ but the administration ‘we,’ ” she said.
Her speeches to government employees have been warm and rousing, something akin to pep rallies, first lady style, as she has thanked them for their work. “I’m visiting — trying to visit all the agencies here to say a few things — one, to say hello,” Mrs. Obama said as the crowd roared back, “Hello!”
Indeed, Mrs. Obama seems to savor her role as a bridge between the White House and the community. Last week, she took time to hug, shake hands with and speak to dozens of government employees — from administrative assistants to agency heads — some of whom said they came close to tears at the sight of her. (“I got a hug!” one woman shouted jubilantly. “I got a hug!”)
Mrs. Obama plans to continue honing her message, her aides say. But she is also eager to get out of the White House and into the city.
Last week, she took her staff to lunch at Five Guys Burgers and Fries, where she had a cheeseburger, French fries and a Coke.
And when a little girl at the charter school visited by the Obamas announced that she dreamed of becoming first lady, Mrs. Obama flashed her self-deprecating wit. “It doesn’t pay much,” she advised.
When I read about this on the huffingtonpost style page, I shook my head in utter amazement. I couldn't believe it. Yes, the founder of the Black Artists Association, Amnau Eele, slammed Michelle Obama for not picking an African-American fashion designer for her inauguration dress. Here is what she said:"It's fine and good if you want to be all 'Kumbaya' and 'We Are the World' by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?"I believe her criticism is completely undeserved. It really is.Not because Michelle Obama is above criticism (no one is) but because the First Lady will have 4 full years (hopefully 8 years) to showcase the artistry and radiance of African-American designers. Think of all the State Dinners at the White House. Think of all of the Democratic Party fundraisers. Think of all the international travel to continent after continent. You get my point? She’s going to have 365 chances each year to wear the digs of African-American designers in high-profile settings – and brag about to the press.I do believe there was an missed opportunity here. Ms. Amnau Eele, who leveled the criticism at Mrs. Obama, could have leveraged her position with the Black Artists Association to be a contact for The First Lady. You know, someone who could consult The First Lady about clothes and styles from both established and up-and-coming designers alike. Michelle Obama has a full staff, and a strong communications team in her office. So why not e-mail her? Why not fax her? Why not send her a nice card congratulating her on her beautiful dress, and letting her know that you’d like to recommend some designers for her next big event?I just don’t get it.Also, let me say this too: I really didn’t like the “be all 'Kumbaya' and 'We Are the World' by representing all different countries” part in Ms. Eele’s criticism either. This is a multicultural country. Latinos, Asian-Americans, Native-Americans, Arab-Americans, and young whites also voted in earth shattering numbers for President Obama. Not just because of him, but also because of his lovely, enterprising wife – a woman of incredible charisma and unimpeachable intellect, and, a woman who walks amongst dignitaries and heads of state without losing that COMMON TOUCH. She resonates with the nameless, faceless, voiceless millions who yearn for an empowered life outside of the shadows and margins of society. Indeed, her agenda (children, education, and military families) is animated by the hopes of the millions who follow and support her - including millions of black designers.Knocking The First Lady for choosing an Asian American designer and a Latino designer is very, very unfair. I don't believe for one second that the Obamas are going to leave African-American designers out in the cold. No one can convince me of that. I mean, of course Michelle Obama is going to wear dresses from black designers (she wears them throughout the year).Michelle Obama is going to continue to reach out to different racial and ethnic groups for designers with great styles. She has to. Her position as First Lady of The United States mandates that she speaks to both the color-specific differences that make us unique (because they exists and are real) as well as the color-neutral commonalities that bring us together. The current composition of this country demands it.But, I can't help wondering how things would have been if Ms. Eele said this instead: “I will continue to celebrate Michelle Obama’s wonderful, awe-inspiring style, and, through my group, and others, consistently suggest ways she can maintain that style through the creative visions of designers, representing the total richness of America’s racial and ethinic diversity. I want to help her in that process.”Why didn’t she say that instead?
