JOIN ORGANIZING FOR AMERICA AND DUVAL COUNTY FOR CHANGE IN OUR COLLABORATIVE EFFORT TO PASS HEALTH CARE LEGISLATION IN WASHINGTONDuval County For Change is asking every concerned citizen, health care professional, health care advocate, union leaders, union members, AARP, Planned Parenthood, NOW, JCCI, and all advocates striving for health care reform to build a "Health Care Team" in our community as requested by President Obama through Organizing for America. Join us at our next meeting, Saturday May 2, 1-3 pm at the Deerwood Branch Public Library on Deerwood Park Blvd. John Bivona, Florida director of Organizing for America, will be speaking about OFA's plan for Health Care Teams to be built around the country in a collective duty to achieve health care reform legislation. In order to realize the change that we all fought so hard for during the election, we must continue to reach out to our neighbors and leaders to involve them in this movement. Collecting pledges, and stories, building a team, and identifying what services, and groups right here in northeast Florida will benefit from health care reform legislation, will allow us to demonstrate the urgent need for leadership and support in Washington for the true need of health care reform. Our legislators can't ignore personal stories, professional support, a strong coalition of partners speaking in favor of the need for health care reform, and providing specific local services, and groups who will benefit from national health care reform. This effort will demonstrate the need of making this national policy a "local policy." It is our duty as Americans to work together and achieve health care for all and for future generations. Please contact 238-9744 for further details. Also visit www.my.barackobama.com for further information about this movement. (copied/pasted with permission)
Since two of our team members (thanks Juli & Steve) have shared the article "A Craigslist for Service" with me (printed by The Huffington Post) I will pass it along. There are several relevant and thought-provoking ideas that connect with Saturday's discussion.
New Beginnings
Riverside for Change met for the first time on December 13, 2008 to discuss how we could enact Barack's vision by working as a positive force in our local community. We gathered in small groups based on issues most important to us and explored ways that we might use our available resources to improve folks' lives in nearby neighborhoods.
Key Findings
As the groups joined together to discuss our findings, several key issues and avenues for action emerged. If you're interested in reading more about this discussion, please view the complete post.

Planned Service Event
Our service event will take place in early January. We will plan a food + donations drive in Riverside and then serve folks at a local pantry. We will use existing community networks we have ties to in order to have as large an impact as possible. More details to follow. If you're interested in being included in our project, please email casie.simpson@gmail.com.

Hi everyone,A week ago the Paterson family went to Metro Park in Jacksonville to hear Barack Obama speak. I created a photo collage which captures some of the event (see attached photo). We had an amazing experience, and I wanted to share it with you.
Obama was to speak in on an outdoor stage set on a riverside park in downtown Jacksonville. The campaign was anticipating 3000 attendees. They closed the park gates 45 minutes before the event started because they had 10,000 attendees and were at capacity. Still, more people kept arriving. Instead of going home when they saw the park was closed, an estimated 8,000 more people gathered in fields and streets next to the park to listen and support.
What I saw truly affected me. I saw people of different ages, backgrounds, genders, classes, and ethnicities freely mingling and talking. I felt the energy of a movement that represents change and hope to so many of us. As I looked around at everyone excitedly talking and sharing together, I had a very hopeful thought: this is America at its best. There is nothing our country can't do if we really mobilize and let every single citizen know he or she has a part to play.
Obama talked about the economy and his plans for tax cuts for 98% of America. He mapped out a plan for ending reliance on Middle Eastern oil. He talked about funding research into renewable energy resources, and how that could be the next boom segment of our economy. He discussed education, and ideas to finance college for those who volunteer or serve our country. Then he asked us all to go and talk with our neighbors about his campaign, so we could win Florida and the rest of the country. I know that we shy away from discussing politics with each other. However, this election means too much. Pat and Parker and I have been talking with our neighbors, and we're going to be canvassing and doing voter registration in the upcoming weeks. I encourage you to discuss your ideas and opinions with others in an open and friendly way--yes, even if your ideas aren't the same as mine.

Here are some of the points that Pat and I feel are important:
Thanks for reading... and good luck to us all! Em
I'm trying very hard not to start this post with something along the lines of, "Oh snap!" or "AHHHHHHH!!!!!" because I'm really, really excited about the prospect of seeing Barak Obama this Saturday. I'm going to try my best to grab my undecided friend and coworker and get him to come out with me to the rally. I'm thrilled. I haven't had a chance to hear Obama speak yet, and I'm greatly looking forward to it. Also, I have NO Democratic or McCain promotional stuff. I need to grab a bumper sticker, to be sure. And maybe a hat or a button. It was a sad day in 2004 when my (Republican) dad came into the house after the election with my Kerry sticker in his hands. Without his interference, I would probably still have it on my car today.

The 11th Hob Nob hosted by Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce took place at Metro Park last night. Great time and an excellent turn out.
Best news - Sen. Obama won the straw ballot for the presidential race!!!
Go Obama!
