Dec. 3, 2008, WednesdayThe City Council will be voting
next week
on whether to okay plans to put a cruise ship terminal at Mayport Village. If any of you have ever spent any time there, you can imagine how this would destroy the place. The residents have been ignored. I don't know how else to help them, so I'm asking that you join me in urging the council to spare this little spot of old Florida. The locals have a website here:
SAVE MAYPORT FISHING VILLAGE
A Dec. 3, 2008 article from Jacksonville.com:
Mayport cruise terminal plans gain ground | Jacksonville.com
I wrote to the council, and Mayor Peyton, stating that the impact of a cruise ship terminal would pose too great a threat on the environment, and that it would be detrimental to the shrimpers, and all that is quaint and lovely about this historic little village. Here are their email addresses:

And it is not a big deal...course the portofbellingham is a large port. We don't even notice them and no one is more tweaky about the enviornment than the chowder heads in Bellingham.
You should visit the port site, I am not sure if it is .com or .net or .org...but the portofbellingham will goooogle...V.

Your port in Bellingham,WA, is a huge shipping facility. The Mayport Fishing Village here in Florida is a tiny, historic community of shrimpers and other residents who have lived there for generations.
This is from the Port of Bellingham website:
"Arrowac Fisheries Closes Bellingham Operation
[Bellingham, Wash.]Last week Arrowac Fisheries Inc. closed its Bellingham operations, laying off about 30 people. This seafood production facility, located in Fairhaven alongside the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, employed 100 people when it was in full production."
The Mayport Village residents fear that the shrimpers will be forced out and it will be the end of their community. It is a quaint, sleepy little area with shrimpers whose families have owned land there for a hundred years. They have no interest in hotels or casinos or development. It is a huge deal to them, and to me.
